Text description provided by the architects. The Green Greenberg Green House was commissioned by the photographer Jill Greenberg and her husband Robert Green. The design developed from their program and the contextual considerations of the existing site. The triangular down‐slope site opens onto a plateau off the street, sloping sharply towards the south side of the property and offers panoramic views to the Los Angeles basin, thus, the organic shape towards the north contoured site condition, and the rectilinear south side that engages the city grid. Through the analysis of these two factors, the initial massing and orientation was generated to optimize spectacular views and natural ventilation.
On the south side of the property, a generous courtyard is carved from the building to provide views and facilitate the buildings ability to use natural ventilation. The open courtyard uses aluminum sliders that allow two levels of the structure to be entirely open to the outdoors. A pool is purposefully placed halfway into the courtyard to assist with the passive cooling system.
The roof transforms into a reinvented backyard, thereby, reinstating the lost land on the ground level. A photovoltaic canopy floats above the roof top garden to provide shade, while simultaneously generating electricity for the entire floor, a fully automated lighting and energy monitoring system, amongst many other sustainable features.
The house began in the LEED for Homes pilot program and will have its final hers rating on 07 August 2012 and complete the LEED certification.
